Gamvar Picture Varnish saturates colors in your painting and gives your work a unified and protective surface. Developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, Gamvar goes on water-clear, stays water-clear and can be easily and safely removed with Gamsol. Gamvar is virtually odorless and ready to apply. Brush apply using the Gamvar Varnish Brush. Do not spray. All Gamvar can be applied when the thickest areas of your painting are thoroughly dry and firm to the touch.

Below are the approximate coverage estimates for Gamvar. A little goes a long way!

  • 4.2 fl oz:  80 square feet
  • 8.5 fl oz: 160 square feet
  • 16.9 fl oz: 320 square feet

What types of artwork can Gamvar be applied to?

Gamvar is an excellent varnish for both oil and acrylic*** paintings. It can also be applied to paintings made with water miscible oil color.
Gamvar can be used on paintings that have gold or metal leaf incorporated into the artwork as well. (Gamvar Gloss is the best choice in this scenario, as both Gamvar Satin and Gamvar Matte contain matting agents that will detract from the reflective quality of the metal leaf.)

Gamvar is not a suitable choice for watercolor or gouache paintings. Due to the absorbency of these types of paints, Gamvar Satin/Matte may dry to an uneven or chalky appearance.

*** DISCLAIMER for acrylic artwork: Some acrylic paintings may require applying an isolation coat , such as the Golden Isolation Coat, before varnishing to keep the varnish from sinking in or drying unevenly. An isolation coat/barrier can help prevent the occurrence of a streaky or blotchy sheen to the varnished acrylic painting.

How long does it take for Gamvar varnish to dry?

Gamvar dries purely by solvent evaporation. A single thin coat of Gamvar generally dries tack-free within 18-24 hours.
In warm dry weather with good air circulation, it is not unheard of for Gamvar to dry in as little as 4-6 hours.

Cold temperatures and, especially, high humidity will increase dry time by several hours. Climates with higher humidity experience a situation where Gamvar has the impression of being tacky, even after all solvent has evaporated away. This happens when humidity levels reach or exceed 75%-85%. Once humidity levels drop, the surface will feel less tacky.

Great if used as directed

Needs to be applied very thinly. It will leave a chalky haze if applied incorrectly.

Varnish - Gamvar Satin

Gamvar Satin is an easy to apply, fairly fast drying varnish with the perfect amount of gloss finish. Buy the smallest quality you can for the project you are working on since fresh vanish works best and doesn’t keep well once opened.

For a Final Coating

I use Gamvar, Matte, Satin or Gloss, as a final step in oil paintings to give a unified finish. Always a good product.
